Martha Henderson grew up in the Shenandoah Valley. She began painting en plein air at the age of fifteen. She does commissioned landscape painting as well as historical and family home sites. Her artworks have been shown in galleries in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
She was the manager of Mickelson Gallery in Washington, D.C. for thirty-nine years. Maurice and Sidney Mickelson, the gallery owners, encouraged and influenced her in her artwork. Martha was an active member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters from 1995 until 2000. She exhibited her artwork with this group in many Washington area locations.
Martha is a charter member of the American Impressionist Society (A.I.S.). She was selected to exhibit in several national group shows with A.I.S. Many artists have encouraged, taught, and/or been a positive mentor in her fifty years of creating works of art. She studied with Skip Lawrence and Herbie Rose in watercolor. In oil, she studied with William Gerhold and master impressionist William Shultz.
